Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Practice and Services

Why go to a therapist?
That’s a great question. Think of therapy or counseling as a “tool” like any other method of self-improvement. Whether it’s going to a gym, eating healthier, changing sleep habits or going to a doctor, therapy can be way of addressing problems (big or small) in your life. You don’t even need to have a “major” problem to go to a therapist. Just feeling unable to deal with your problem or feeling unhappy makes you a good therapy candidate.
Why do I need a therapist? Why can’t I just talk to a friend or a family member?
Friends, family, religious leaders and other figures are an important parts of the support team in an individual’s life. However, a therapist is specifically trained to provide a safe, confidential environment in which you can heal, grow and become the best version of yourself. A good therapist can help you to find your own answers rather than “telling” you solutions.
What type of therapy does Dr. Soriano utilize?
There are literally dozens of different types of therapy. Many therapists advertise a specific “type” of therapy. You might have heard of some of these branches of therapy, whether they include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotion Focused Therapy, Psychdynamic Therapy, Family Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy and many others. Rather than focus on one specific subtype of therapy which forces clients to adapt to the style of therapist, I try to utilize a wide variety of techniques and strategies to find the best therapy solution for you as an individual.
How will I know if Dr. Soriano is the right therapist for me?
This is a wonderful question I’m frequently asked by my clients. That first therapy session is a lot like a blind date. It can be stressful to meet a new therapist and often times my clients have tried other therapists in the past. Below are a few questions you might want to ask yourself after the first session to see if therapy with me feels “right” to you:

  • How easy was it to talk with me?
  • Do I seem like someone you could trust?
  • Did it feel like I was really listening to you?
  • Do I seem like I have a “plan” for how to help you?

If you seem to have positive responses to these questions, I might be a good fit for you!

How long does therapy last?
That’s completely up to you! No matter how “big” or “small” the challenges you might be facing in life, I feel my clients are the only ones who can decide how long therapy should last. I am more than happy to provide brief, solution-focused therapy or work on deeper internal issues. No matter what direction you wish to go in therapy, I’ll follow your lead.
How are Dr. Soriano’s credentials (PsyD) any different from some of the other types of therapists I’ve seen? (MD, LCPC, LCSW, MSW, etc)?
Dr. Jason Soriano has a doctoral level degree in Clinical Psychology. His degree (PsyD) indicates he attended a professional psychology school for five years in order to earn his doctorate. During the course of his doctoral training Dr. Soriano spent over 4,000 hours in supervised training honing his clinical skill and learning the intricacies of different styles of assessment and therapy. Conversely, the other degrees listed above have a Master’s degree which only requires two total years of supervised clinical training. While there are incredibly talented Master’s level clinicians, Dr. Soriano brings extensive therapy clinical experience as well as a wide-range of psychological testing experience to his practice and his clients.
What types of insurance does Dr. Soriano accept?
Currently, Dr. Soriano is covered under most major insurance plans, many EAP programs and other forms of coverage. However, as most people are aware, health insurance is a constantly changing, evolving system of coverage. Whether you are attempting to seek psychological testing or therapy, it is in your best interest to call your healthcare provider (usually under behavioral health) and ensure Dr. Soriano is covered under your plan.
What additional certifications and training do you have?
Dr. Soriano has certifications in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is a type of treatment dedicated to helping individuals resolve trauma or painful memories. He is also certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which is a type of therapy designed to teach people how to live in the moment, cope with stress, regulate emotions, and improve relationships with others.
